What does joy, sadness, excitement, anger, happiness and elation have in common? While these are diverse expressions, each of these emotions, along with many others, are also powerful multilayered communications.

Consider, for example, the culturally dreaded expression of anger. Along with the clear and rather unmistakable signal which captures your attention (and usually the attention of others), anger also provides a great deal of significant information.

If you’re listening, that is.

Do you actually listen for the content of the communication? Or do you just hear the attention-grabbing signal layer, get carried away and leave it at that?

All emotion holds and transmits a great deal more information than that contained in the attention-grabbing layer. That layer is, of course, quite significant in that it was how you were able to attract your attention in the first place. At the same time, recognize that there’s a whole lot more going on where that came from!

Within that complex, multilayered emotional communication you will also find – assuming you look, that is – a great deal of additional information you are trying to share with yourself. That includes specific information about the substance of the matter at hand. And you certainly don’t want to miss the substance, do you?

Not paying attention to the specific information you are trying to share with yourself would be like ignoring the contents of a gift package and, instead, only focusing on the overarching excitement (or fear or anger, etc) of the package itself!

A broader perceptual strategy which leads to personal empowerment is to take a moment, a deep breath, and actually reflect on the content within the emotional signal. What beliefs are you expressing? What values are on the line? What fear or anticipation is being expressed? What is the basis for the urgency or strength of that emotional signal? What specifically are you saying to yourself beyond the obvious?

Once you begin to distinguish the emotional signal from the content of the message being communicated, you will have opened yourself up to a huge stream of additional information that you otherwise are not likely to have incorporated into your reality. This is incredibly empowering.

And need I say; that broad stream of powerful multilayered communication directly impacts the spectrum of choices you offer to yourself and, in turn, your direct awareness of the personal power you wield at that precise moment in time.

You wake up one morning and find out that you are actually a billionaire with incredible resources at hand – but when you look in your pocket you only see a twenty dollar bill. Now that’s not much of a problem if you don’t think you are a billionaire and you see yourself as having a twenty dollar net worth. On the other hand, if you know that you are wealthy, then only seeing a twenty dollar bill in your pocket might well be a bit confusing and frustrating!

This scenario is similar to your relationship with your own personal power. So long as you only allow yourself access to twenty dollars worth of information about yourself, you will likely remain somewhat confused and frustrated.

Why do you accept limited information about yourself and about your personal power? One reason is because there is a tendency to rely on the narrow, familiar part of yourself as reflected within your thought process as the primary, if not sole, source of information about yourself and about your personal power.

However, you also provide yourself an incredible amount of useful information about yourself through other valid avenues of communication. Those include, for example, your emotions, intelligence, intuition, feelings, impressions, senses, impulses, daydreams, imagination and so on.

To the extent you are open to all of yourself, to all of your communications in all forms, you are then positioned to recognize and interact with all of your reality, not merely that portion represented and presented to you within your thought process.

By being actively aware of the wide array of communications you offer yourself in the moment, you effortlessly provide yourself access to much more of you. At that point your recognition of the actual value of your personal power will begin to soar.

To swing open the door to your own personal empowerment, simply recognize that you already possess a billion dollars worth of listening power – and then listen!
